About Real IDs

Check out the resources below on how to obtain your Real ID, why it's important, and what to expect at the BMV. Each document can be downloaded and shared as needed.

At the BMV

A BMV Representative may ask you "Have you ever been convicted of a felony under the motor vehicle laws of this state, or any other felony in the commission of which a motor vehicle was used, that has not been expunged by a court?"

  • This question can be asked whether a person is going for a Real ID or Legacy ID.

  • Indiana Code (IC 9-24-9-2) requires the BMV to ask this question. Presenting false, misleading, or incorrect information or misrepresenting information to the bureau for the purpose of obtaining a driver's license or permit is reasonable ground for suspension.

  • The question should only be asked as stated above. If you want to report an instance when you were not asked the correct question, you can report it to branch management at the branch or someone in BMV leadership.
